We specialize in aluminum structures exclusively. ll fabric or canvas awnings, retractable fabric awnings, or wood awning frames.
If you've had a fabric awning that failed and want to replace it with an aluminum alternative that will actually last in Louisiana's climate, we can help.
If you specifically want fabric or retractable awnings, we're not the right contractor — and we'd rather tell you that directly than take a job that isn't in our wheelhouse.
Fabric awnings deteriorate in Louisiana in a single season — the UV fades them, the humidity molds them, and the first tropical storm blows them apart. Aluminum awnings are the right answer for Greater New Orleans: built from the same material as our patio covers, they hold up in the same conditions, and they require virtually no maintenance over a 20+ year lifespan.
Joe's Gutters & Patios installs aluminum awnings over doors, windows, garage entries, and any opening that needs shade and weather protection. Available in the same six standard colors as our patio covers, built to Louisiana wind load requirements.

Where We Install Aluminum Awnings

Front Door and Entry Canopies
The most common awning application — overhead coverage over the front door that keeps rain off arriving guests, shades the entry from direct sun, and improves curb appeal. We size entry canopies to project enough to cover the full entry step and provide effective rain protection.

Side Door and Utility Entry Awnings
Coverage over side yard doors, laundry entries, and utility access points. Practical protection that keeps rain off you when carrying groceries or laundry. Often installed on the north or east side of homes where a patio cover wouldn't be practical.

Garage Entry Awnings
Overhead coverage over a garage entry that provides protection during loading and unloading, keeps rain from blowing into the garage on the open side, and shades the garage doors from direct sun.

Back Door and Porch Awnings
Coverage over back doors and small rear entry points. Often used on homes where a full patio cover isn't needed but some weather protection at the back entry is wanted.

Aluminum Awning Installation — What to Expect
Attachment to Different Wall Materials
New Orleans area homes have diverse exterior wall materials — brick, stucco, wood siding, fiber cement, and concrete block. We attach aluminum awnings to all of these materials using appropriate fasteners and weatherproofing methods for each surface type. Brick and masonry attachments use concrete anchors. Wood and fiber cement use lag screws with proper weathersealing. All attachment points are sealed against water intrusion.
Sizing and Projection
Awning projection (how far it extends from the wall) is the critical measurement for weather protection. A 2-foot projection keeps rain off the immediate threshold but won't protect against wind-driven rain. A 4–6 foot projection provides meaningful protection in Louisiana's conditions. We recommend projection based on the application and your specific exposure — we'll discuss this at the estimate.
Permits for Awnings in Louisiana
Most residential awnings do not require a building permit in Jefferson Parish or Orleans Parish — particularly smaller awnings over doors and windows. Larger entry canopies or awnings with structural attachments to the building may require one depending on size and attachment method. Assess with your local Building Departmente estimate.
Aluminum Awnings in the Greater New Orleans Architectural Tradition
New Orleans has a long tradition of covered entries and overhanging structures that respond to the local climate — the city's shotgun houses, Creole cottages, and Garden District mansions all incorporate covered porches, galleries, and entries that provide shade and rain protection as fundamental architectural elements.
Aluminum awnings are a practical modern continuation of this tradition. They provide the same functional benefits — shade at the entry, rain protection over windows, weather protection at side doors — in a material that is maintenance-free in a climate that would destroy traditional wood in a decade or less.
In New Orleans' historic districts and in neighborhoods with strong traditional architectural character, aluminum awning profiles can be selected to complement the home's design. White aluminum over a traditional New Orleans cottage reads quietly and correctly. Bronze or copper-tone on a Victorian-era home complements the trim colors. We discuss this at the estimate and bring color samples.
Joe's Gutters & Patios
installs aluminum awnings for residential properties only. We do not take on commercial awning projects.
Do awnings need to match my existing gutters or patio cover?
They don't have to match exactly, but coordinating colors creates a more polished overall exterior. If you're adding awnings to a home that already has Joe's gutters or a patio cover, we can match the color precisely. If the existing work was done by another contractor, we'll bring color samples to find the closest match.
I have a historic home — are aluminum awnings appropriate?
Aluminum awnings can be appropriate on historic homes depending on the neighborhood, the specific home's character, and any applicable historic preservation guidelines. In New Orleans' local historic districts, any exterior modifications require review by the Historic District Landmarks Commission. We can discuss what's appropriate for your specific home and location.

FAQs
Aluminum Carport FAQs
How much does an aluminum carport cost in New Orleans?
Aluminum carport pricing depends on size, configuration (attached vs. freestanding), panel type, and footing requirements. Single-vehicle freestanding carports start around $5,500–$10,000 for basic configurations. Two-vehicle and boat covers are priced larger. All estimates are free and done on-site.
Do I need a permit for a carport in Jefferson Parish?
Depends on size and attachment. Freestanding small carports sometimes don't require a permit. Attached carports and any structure over certain sizes almost always do. We assess at the estimate; permits are the homeowner's responsibility.
Can you build a carport to fit my boat trailer?
Yes — we regularly build carports for boat trailers, pontoon boats, and watercraft of all sizes. We take the exact dimensions of your rig at the estimate (length, width, height with the boat on it) and build with appropriate clearance.
What is the difference between a carport and a patio cover?
Functionally, they're the same structure — an aluminum-covered structure. The difference is application: a patio cover is attached to the house over a patio, designed for outdoor living. A carport covers a driveway or parking area for vehicles. The construction is essentially identical; it's the location and purpose that differs. This is also why many Louisiana homeowners search "aluminum carport" when looking for a covered outdoor living structure.
How do aluminum carports hold up in Louisiana weather?
Our aluminum carports are built with solid concrete footings and quality structural connections. A cheaply built freestanding carport with shallow footings will not hold up — we don't build that way.
How long does carport installation take?
Most carport installations are completed in 1–2 days once materials are on-site. If concrete footings are needed, allow 24–48 hours for the concrete to cure before the structure is built on it.
Can a carport be painted or does it come in colors?
Our aluminum panels come in six factory baked-enamel colors: White, Ivory, Wicker, Clay, Bronze, and Black. The finish is applied at the factory before forming — it's not painted on-site. This means it doesn't chip, peel, or require repainting.
